the sterilization program seems drastic today, but someone years ago thought this was the thing to do, even the lady's loving grandmother. it brings the unnessary killing of millions of babies by abortion to my mine. It seems okay today but in the

future we will see the wickedness of the program.

Shocking, sad, but flawed piece.

In talking about Eugenics you left out it's most notable and vocal proponent, Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood and speaker at KKK rallies.

She was the one who selected Dr. Clarence J. Gamble to be the Birth Control Federation of America regional director of the South.

Sanger knew blacks were a religious people and how useful ministers would be to what she tilted "The Negro Project".

In a letter to Gamble, 10 December 1939 Sanger wrote "The minister's work is also important and he should be trained, perhaps by the Federation as to our ideals and the goal that we hope to reach. We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population, and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members"

Thank you for giving a voice to victims who were silenced. The continued conduct is much like a third World country that the US says they have to teach human rights. But with the current bills in both State/Federal by law makers it's clear the nuts/sickos want those laws again. Stories like this come from backward thinking people who use God's Name while doing Satan's work. What's even sad is to assure these horror bills come back the elected officials are taking bribes. We know many so called religious leaders are nuts as we waited for the end of the world on the advise of one of those nutters. Stories like this and worse are kept secret because it shows exactly who we are and destroys the image we tell to the World. The names of the Wealthy Americans who funded this program are dead and had to answer for their evil. Many elected officials agreed and took part, along with the churches. What price is a human worth as the question asked to the setting Governor. Well for God your priceless and he even sent his son to die for our sins. To bad America has lost the real Christian Religion many talk about as actions speak louder then words.

This shocked me to my core!  This IS the United States and it is horrifying that this took place and happened to our citizens.  This action was not Christian, it was not ethical, it was not legal and it was not moral.  It is not American.  It is despicable.  Every single record should be released and every single victim should be compensated for being victimized by the wealthy, their government, their ministers.  And every single individual who is still living who was involved should be prosecuted from crimes against humanity.  I cannot see the difference between this and genocide.  While I am sick to my stomach having watched this story - Thank you Brian Williams for continuing to have the best journalistic integrity and bringing these stories to light.

It is sincerely disappointing your story, "State of Shame" chose to identify only wealthy men when in fact Margaret Sanger is perhaps one of the leaders in our country on eugenics and founded Planned Parenthood as a means of carrying out her filtration. It is believed by a great many Sanger, through her writings, demonstrated her distaste for people of other races to be less valued in society. After returning from Europe she turbo charged her campaign to enable women to have "choice" through free clinics in low income and primarily African-American communities.

Sanger is recorded espousing those beliefs and to this day many believe Planned Parenthood isn't primarily offering services in low income communities because "that's where they are needed"; indeed young boys and girls from a wealthy family who don't feel they can talk with adults in their lives would benefit from an honest clinic in their part of town. Planned Parenthood simply continues filtering out the "lesser" in our population so society doesn't have to deal with them. What is sad is people at the lower levels in the organization (nurses and receptionists) may not even know who Sanger is or what she stood for, it takes breaking through an entirely different glass ceiling to find out why clinics are placed where they are and that Sanger's agenda still lives on today.

Hopefully you will consider other eugenicists who continue to have their agenda processed today in an upcoming segment because as horrible as it was for a state to do it, the Federal government subsidizes an organization with it's founder and foundation highly involved with eugenics which, when added up, likely includes many more people than the state did during that period of time. Both should be criticized. Since Planned Parenthood still operates with immunity perhaps they should have a spotlight shown upon them?

Mr. Williams and Dr. Snyderman, no offense meant to any of the victims in this piece but your research was rather inadequate regarding some of the comments you made at the end of it. While you may be "shocked" how a state could sponsor something so horrific "in America", the FEDERAL government had been doing the same thing for decades. National forced sterilization programs were paid for by grant money provided by the federal government who would reimburse 90% of the cost to sterilize an indigent woman. Hundreds of thousands of forced sterilizations of many races occurred even before the end of WWII. It was a policy of the Indian Health Service to sterilize American Indian women who would go to an IHS clinic for something as simple as a hang nail. They got away with it in similar fashion to NC, complete with falsified documentation allegedly signed by the victim or a sponsoring family member. This type of heinous mutilation of Indigenous women's bodies continued even when Bush Sr. was president.

Many of these women are still alive. It wouldn't be too hard to imagine that the federal government would not want NC to agree to make big payouts to the victims of their state sponsored eugenics programs. This is the truth of how ugly and heinous our governments can be, any of them.

Mr. Williams, I love you on Jimmy Fallon, I love your sense of humor and the appearance of trustworthiness and honesty in your reporting. I really want "Rock Center" to succeed but in all honesty it will be a tough pill to swallow when I see and hear what I did during that piece as well as the commentary provided after.

After seeing what has transpired not so long ago , why was something so precious and God given taken away from all these human beings? What gives anyone the right to make

a decision for someone who already is of a sound mind and body? I can't believe this went on and on how terrible.

What's great about America now? We make Germans look like saints.

these woman would have only produced offspring that would be a burden on the tax payers and most of their offspring would become a police problem so the state was saved a lot of expense and these woman really have nothing to complain about the state did them a favor the only victims here will be the tax payers if the state has to pay a settlement for doing what was right poor uneducated people should not be allowed to breed

I feel sorry for the lady, but her loving grandmother approved the procedure. This

was acceptable at the time, but society has changed the way it looks at sterilization. The process brings home the question of abortion. Millions of babies are murdered by our approving society. Hopefully one day attitudes will change like the sterilization issue.

obviously the court system thought they shouldnt have kids becuase they couldnt take care of them. So now instead of drawing welfare, medicade, food stamps etc they want their money in a lump sum. Get a job and adopt a kid and shut it already. If i was payed for everytime i was wronged id be a millionare! Get over it!

Adopt an Anchor Baby.....Deport the Parents.
